The Road To Yesterday: A Fable

In which we examine how democracy got debacled.

This is the story of two senators, the Senator from Illinois, and the Senator Born In Illinois.

Once upon a time in America (three weeks ago), the Senator from Illinois was having a lot of success energizing the electorate.

A little too much success, it seems, as one pundit's sleeve became too small to wear his heart on...

I said "heart on," Chris. Heart. On.

Well, it seems that the pundit realized how such gushing could be misconstrued, and so, the next day that people got the chance to go out and pick who they wanted to lead them, he decided to make sure everyone in America knew that he hadn't gone soft...

All of a sudden, the wind started blowing in a different direction. The MEDIA had been rigging the election for the Senator From Illinois! And had been caught red handed!

With this chink in the armor revealed, a small cabal of upstarts, who for anonymity's sake we'll just call the "WGA," decided that it would be a good idea to make a splash so that the citizens of this country knew who had the real power, and suddenly the Senator Born in Illinois was yukkin' it up anywhere the WGA held influence, places we'll call "SNL" and "TDSwJS".

Then, just when it was safe to laugh with the Senator Born In Illinois, it even became okay to laugh AT her...

The moral of the story?

She who laughs last will see you next Tuesday.

DISCLAIMER: The bit about SAG is potentially fictional. There's nothing to base that on... that I know of.

The State of the Union - from our perspective.

One commonly held misconception is that "Hail to the Chief" is played at the State of the Union address. Bush actually prefers his personal theme song...
